Mutton soup is a very typical malay or indonesian dish. It must have been 20 years!? since I last had ths dish. No idea why I waited to so long until i decided to dish it out. But it was a good tasty experience! Many people are put off by the strong pungent smell of mutton. For that reason i have chosen to use lamb meat instead. It’s a little milder and the meat very tender. I love mutton! Whenever we’re on the move and abroad I’d look for fresh lamb meat. There so many ways to prepare it, be it the provincial or tunis way or just like how i used to know it – the indonesian way.
800g lamb / mutton (cut in cubes)
1 big tomato
2 stalks cellery
2 cinnamon sticks
1/2 teasp. tumeric powder
2 big onions
2 tbs oil
Wash and then cut the meat in cubes. Blend the spices with a little oil in a food processor until smooth. Heat up the pan and fry the spices until fragent. Add meat and fry until brown, then add celery and stir for another 2 mins. Add 6-8 cups of water, tomatoes and continue simmering for abt 50 mins. 20 mins before it’s finish add the diced potatoes.
Serve and garnish with cellery leaves and spring onions. Goes well with sambal terong or terong kecap manis and steamed rice.
